Effects of Estuary-Wide Seagrass Loss on Fish Populations

چکیده

Globally, habitat loss in coastal marine systems is a major driver of species decline, and estuaries are particularly susceptible to loss. Along the United States Pacific coast, monospecific eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds form estuarine vegetated habitat. In Morro Bay, California, experienced an unprecedented decline > 95%, from 139 ha 2007 < 6 by 2017. Fish populations were compared before after using trawl surveys. Beach seines surveys also conducted during post-decline period characterize within outside remnant beds. While estuary-wide did not result fewer fish or less biomass, it led changes composition. The post-eelgrass was characterized increases flatfish (mainly Citharichthys stigmaeus) staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus), decreases specialists including bay pipefish (Syngnathus leptorhynchus) shiner perch (Cymatogaster aggregata). There similar trends inside patches. These findings support evidence across multiple ecosystems suggesting that predominance habitat-specialists predicts whether leads overall abundance. addition, critical habitats seascapes can restrict population connectivity lead range contraction. For pipefish, Bay likely create biogeographic divide. Currently, dominated sculpins, longevity this new ecosystem state will depend on future recovery dynamics supported ecosystem-based management approaches.

Edge effects on fish associated with seagrass and sand patches

Seagrass beds form naturally patchy habitats with large areas of seagrass–sand interface, or edges. Fish were sampled at 3 sites in the temperate waters of Victoria, Australia, using small (0.5 m wide) push nets at 7 positions: unvegetated sand distant from the patch on the seaward side, the sand edge adjacent to the seagrass on the seaward side, the seagrass edge on the seaward side, the middl...

A Comparison of Fish Assemblages from Seagrass and Unvegetated Areas of a Southern Australian Estuary

Assemblages of small fish from eelgrass (mainly Zostera muelleri) and unvegetated patches in a shallow, marine-dominated estuary were compared over one year as a preliminary step towards finding the consequences of eelgrass loss to small fish. There were more species and more individuals at eelgrass sites than at unvegetated sites at every sampling period. Multivariate analysis (MDS ordination)...

Effects of fish farming on seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay: seagrass decline after organic loading cessation

The effects of fish farming on a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) meadow at Fomells Bay, Minorca (Balearic Islands) were studied. Changes in plant and meadow features (e.g. shoot morphology, shoot density, biomass, rhizome growth, nutrient and soluble sugars concentrations...) in three stations along a transect from a disturbed (organic pollution due to fish cultures) to an undisturbed site were a...

Resource distribution influences positive edge effects in a seagrass fish.

According to conceptual models, the distribution of resources plays a critical role in determining how organisms distribute themselves near habitat edges. These models are frequently used to achieve a mechanistic understanding of edge effects, but because they are based predominantly on correlative studies, there is need for a demonstration of causality, which is best done through experimentati...
